The Brief.
Following a successful tender, Pen Y Bryn Joinery Ltd were awarded the enabling and infrastructure works as part of the multi-million pound scheme for replacing one of the existing CT scanners at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd.
The schemes design brief was to meet the demand for a higher specification facility that would provide the department with greater capacity to deliver more complex scans.
The new design provided the department with a state-of-the-art Siemens SOMATOM Drive CT scanner and control room. A new bed wait and accessible change to stipulate patients with a place of comfort and dignity. A redesigned Blood and Student room and a redeveloped courtyard to accommodate a Dalair Air Handling Unit and heat recovery system.
Project Delivery
The project was delivered within the constraints of the live clinical environment and during a global pandemic. Extensive co-ordination of the design team and contractors was required to ensure the mitigating factors did not implicate the completion date. The scope of works included.
Demolition and isolations
- Stripping out significant sections of redundant mechanical and electrical services in co-ordination with Operational Estates, for isolations
- Light demolition of partition walls, non-structural walls, doors, ceilings and floor finishes
Builders work
- Fitting of new radiation protection to ceiling soffits, walls and lead doors to meet the ‘Radiation Protection Advisors’ (RPA) requirements
- Formation of new room partitions
- Floor recessed supply for the scanner
- New ceilings, floors and finishes
- Installation of control room viewing screen
- Various joinery items including fire rated door sets, medical units
Mechanical & Electrical
- Installation of Dalair Air Handling Unit – with the provision of a crane
- New GRP housing to accommodate AHU DB board
- Installation of new heat recovery and comfort cooling systems
- A package of mechanical works including new mechanical ductwork, representation of plenums and balancing of the mechanical ventilation for the area
- Installation of new clinical hand wash basins and the designated WC
- New dedicated electrical supply for the CT Scanner
- Starkstrom UPS / IPS installation
- Small power and data circuits, lighting and specialist earthing connections to a new earth reference bar
- Modification and upgrade to fire alarm, nurse call and ICT systems
- Testing and commissioning of the installed systems in conjunction with the equipment specialist installers and Operational Estates
Civil works
- removal of 90+ tonnes of spoil
- formation of footpaths and concrete slab
- installation of new air handling unit
- installation of hit and miss fencing
- new above ground foul drainage
- all of which required a crane to over sail materials and plant over the main hospital
- 100+m cable run to supply new CT Scanner
