The Brief.

Working with our clients at Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board once again, we were involved in the development of a new Interventional Radiology suite which is designed to help reduce the number of scans that patients need before a procedure.

The new suite in the Radiology Department of Wrexham Maelor Hospital, involved our team remodelling the whole area and installing a new Siemens Artis Q C-arm,a state-of-the-art x-ray machine which delivers improved levels of image quality with a reduced radiation dose.

The scheme presented a number of unique challenges including:

  • Working with lead lined materials, such as radiation protective screens, doors and walls to meet RPA requirements
  • Achieve the high tolerances required by Siemens to install equipment
  • Large amounts of work in live areas
  • Large amounts of out of hours works, tight deadlines
  • Preparing and setting up for temporary mobile scanner 2 days a week for duration of the project

The redevelopment of the Interventional Radiology area together with the installation of this new equipment, has made a massive difference to all our patients who use our service. The Pen Y Bryn team were amazing in terms of enabling us to continue the provision of vital services during the substantial period of building works.
